If you’ve either attended or taken part in a significant number of weddings in your life, then you’ve probably become aware of the fact that June is a very popular wedding month.

Now, contrary to popular belief, June actually isn’t the most popular month to get married in.

According to the Dallas Oasis, the most popular month for weddings is actually September—which is followed by June for second place—and then comes October, which takes the third spot.

But we’ve all heard the sound bites.

June is the best month for weddings.

But why?

Well, in this post, that’s exactly what we’re going to explore.

Let’s dive into the mystery and ask the all-important question.

Why is June such a popular month for weddings?

1. Examining The Origins Of The Word ‘June’

At first glance, we need to take the name of the month into account.

There’s actually a lot of superstition surrounding the month of June and its relationship to love, romance, fertility, and marriage.

The name June, in fact, is derived from the name of the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno

In Roman times, families had a firm belief that when a couple got married in the month of June, the goddess of marriage would bless their marriage with happiness forever.

So as you can see, this isn’t necessarily a modern phenomenon. The practice of associating June with blessed wedded matrimony dates back at least as far as the ancient Roman Empire.

But that’s just the first clue.

2. Health, Wellness, And Sanitation

Now, let’s fast-forward through time a bit to examine life during the middle ages in Europe.

Here, we find another reason for why June may be associated with weddings, even to this day.

Back then, bathing happened much less frequently than it does in our convenient modern-day culture.

And this was especially true during the winter.

Back then, since it was so cold in the winter and so difficult to keep a living environment warm (and since it took so much time, effort, and energy to warm enough water for a decent bath), people rarely bathed during the winter months.

But bathing was much more commonplace during the summer months, with June really being right in the middle of the summer season.

In fact, among the poorer common folk, it was often standard practice for people to only take one bath the entire year—and June would have been the ideal month for it!

Thus, we can see how getting married in June was perhaps the cleanest and freshest time to do so—because everyone would have likely had the opportunity to bathe in preparation.

And so, for health, wellness, and overall sanitary reasons, this would have made June an ideal time of the year to celebrate wedded matrimony.

3. Family Planning

Another reason for why June has likely become so closely associated with weddings, even in our modern western culture, is due to the practicality of family planning and how it relates to the wedding ceremony.

For example, if a bride got married in June, and then became pregnant with her first baby soon after—that baby would go on to be born sometime in the spring.

And there would have been a myriad of benefits to such a timeline in terms of family planning, safety, and survivability.

For many reasons, spring would have been an ideal time for the birth of a baby. This was especially true 200 to 300 years ago, before our society possessed many of the modern technologies and conveniences that we enjoy today.

In the spring, the weather is milder. Thus, there’s less danger of harsh, cold weather negatively affecting the baby’s health and development.

Plus, with harvest time right around the corner in the fall, this really sets the child up for the greatest potential odds for health, wellness, and survival during the early stages of life.

And so, we can see that even dating back just a few hundred years, there’s a very practical application for associating June with being a great time for marriage and starting a family.

Shopping for bridesmaid dresses is a big job.

And not surprisingly, many people are turning to the Internet to help them accomplish it.

Let’s be honest—we all like to order things online.

It’s convenient, it’s easy, and it’s fast.

Plus, you have access to literally a world full of products right at your fingertips.

But some items are just better shopped for in person. And bridesmaid dresses absolutely fall into this category.

Here’s the thing. Your wedding is a very important day. And the bridesmaid dresses are one of the more essential pieces to the puzzle.

If they’re not quite right, you’re really going to notice it—and it’s going to make you wish that you had taken the time and made the effort to ensure that they were perfect for the occasion.

In this post, you’re going to learn five different, specific reasons for why it’s always better to buy bridesmaid dresses locally, as opposed to online.

1. They Seldom Look Or Fit As Advertised

If you’ve ever ordered clothes online, then you probably know exactly how often this happens.

You see a dress, a nice top, or a pair of shorts or a pair of shoes while shopping online.

You order them.

They get shipped to you—fast and on schedule.

Except, when you put them on for the first time, they just don’t fit.

Or even worse, they don’t even look like they did in the pictures.

Very rarely does this work out to your advantage.

Then, it can really only be solved with a time-consuming return and refund process.

By contrast, buying bridesmaid dresses in person assures that you’ll get to not only see what they look like on the bridesmaids, but this process also gives you the power to compare different options to see which one looks the best.

2. You Can’t Feel The Material

When you order online, you’ll be taking a somewhat wild guess as to the quality of the material

Pictures only do you so much good.

And even then, they can be deceiving.

It’s always better to shop for such an important dress in person—because it’ll allow you to actually put your hands on the fabric to feel what the dresses are made from for yourself. Trust us, your bridesmaids will thank you!

3. You Can’t Account For Body Style

Anyone who’s ever purchased a dress knows the underlying frustration that comes from trying to match different types of dresses to different body styles.

We’re all different and unique.

And yet, it’s nearly impossible to tell how a particular dress will look on someone until they’ve had the chance to try it on.

And online dresses are the worst for this, because it feels like they’re really only made for one specific body type (in slightly different size variations).

It’s always a better idea to try all of the potential bridesmaid dresses on all of the bridesmaids before making your final choice.

This will allow you to get a great sense of what everyone thinks about them, how they feel while being worn, how they match with the wedding gown, etc.

Remember, we have in-house alterations to take care of all those little adjustments, so the dresses fit perfectly!

4. Bridesmaid Dress Disasters Are Costly

Imagine ordering three bridesmaid dresses with plenty of time to try them on for the wedding.

But then, shipping runs late—or the dresses get back-ordered (yikes).

Then, a month later, they arrive late—and you realize that not only do they not fit well, but that they’re strangely sized about three sizes too small

Plus, the material is a slightly different color than the pictures displayed—and they’re just different enough to not really match with the gown.

These types of disasters can actually be really costly.

They can cut into the valuable time you need to properly plan your big day.

Shopping in person, however, really helps to eliminate this potentiality. And depending on how many bridesmaids are in your wedding party, it could have been a major disaster. So why risk it?

5. You Could End Up Wasting Money

While many online retailers do offer returns and/or exchanges, it’s not always such a simple process.

We’ve talked to more than one bride who, in the bustle and the stress of trying to get ready for the big day (and replacing those awful online bridesmaid dresses), forgot to send back the ones she ordered.

And guess what?

That can add up to hundreds of dollars just wasted on dresses that nobody is going to be able to wear.

This just isn’t acceptable.

The way we see it, your hard-earned money should actually go to things that’ll help you to have an amazing, beautiful wedding—and not wasted on dresses that arrive late, three sizes too small, that are a different color than what you ordered.

Hopefully, this post has helped you to understand some of the dangers of ordering bridesmaid dresses online.
